Fort Hamilton is the 3rd oldest continually garrisoned fort in the nation. Named in honor of Alexander Hamilton, the cornerstone for Fort Hamilton was placed in June of 1825 and the first troops garrisoned Fort Hamilton in November of 1831 to provide protection to New York Harbor.

Fort Hamilton became a National Historic Landmark on 7 July 1974 and a New York City Landmark on 8 March 1977
